What are the themes of your play?
The themes of BLACK LOVE are centred around Joy, Identity and Love.
Why did you write it and why now?
I wrote BLACK LOVE as a reclamation of space, agency and energy. It was about expanding the limits of what I thought I was capable of. It felt important to me to be a voice for younger emerging creatives.
Which playwrights are you influenced by and why?
I’m heavily influenced by the pioneers of Black British Theatre like Winsome Pinnock, but I’m also inspired by the innovative playwrights creating work now like Ryan Calais Cameron, Azuka Oforka and debbie tucker green. I’m enthralled by writers who are wildly provocative, intentional and write in a way that ignites some ferocity within you.
What do you hope to achieve as a playwright?
I hope to defy expectations, shatter ceilings, and write words and stories that resonate with those who interact with them. I hope my writing becomes as accessible as possible and encourages younger underrepresented people to be creative and write too.
