In November we were were excited to offer a  free, one-day writing workshop for 30 Black British playwrights living in the East Midlands, the South West and West Yorkshire (ten in each region).

The workshops were led by past winners of the Alfred Fagon Award for Best New Play of the Year –
Oladipo Agboluaje, Juliet Gilkes Romero and Paula B. Stanic.

The workshops were supported by a grant from Arts Council England and the Alfred Fagon Award Circle of Friends, and hosted by Bristol Old Vic, Leeds Playhouse and Nottingham Playhouse.

“Amazing! Intense. Incredibly well structured, supportive and intimate. We jumped straight in to ‘brainstorming/journalling’ and then sharing the aspects of our plays that weren’t working or that we had problems with. This was such a great way of focusing and reflecting and listening intently to how we might work through these issues. I also loved the exercise about imagining our characters aged 30, 40 , 50 etc – that was quite a breakthrough for me.”

“The workshop content exceeded my expectations. It skilfully revisited the foundations of writing while opening space for reflection, discussion, and shared discovery. I appreciated how the session balanced practical craft with conceptual exploration.”

Leeds Playhouse participant

“[The] workshop was superbly structured and pitched at just the right level with great use of handouts and examples to illustrate the points Juliet was making.  Was hoping to gain insights into the craft and the workshop most definitely met expectations and then some.”

We can’t wait to read the participants plays next spring!
