What are the themes of your play?

How much should we allow loss to impact us?

From missing a period of time to a literal loss of loved ones, the play explores how differing levels of loss fundamentally change us. How it affects our interactions with others and our outlook on life.

What is the true measure of success?

One person’s success is another person’s settling but when the measure of ‘making it’ has been hijacked by social media and celebrities, can anyone ever be happy with their lot in life?

Why did you write it and why now?

I wrote this because I love art and I rarely see people who look like me in art galleries or museums. UK statistics confirmed my own anecdotal experience and made me want to write something that addressed this while simultaneously encouraging minorities to look at art in a whole new way.

I wrote it now because after trying to express this story for years, I finally found the confidence and means to tell it.

Which playwrights are you influenced by and why?

Samuel Beckett, for combining nothing and nonsense in such a darkly humorous way.

Ryan Calais Cameron, for tackling tough issues in an engaging and free form.

What do you hope to achieve as a playwright?

To expose people to new things and ideas but make them laugh, cry, and be entertained as well. And to grow as a writer by getting live feedback from an audience of people.

I’d also love for my stories to inspire a generation of black creatives to engage with the theatre industry long after I’m gone.
