Roy Williams wins the inaugural Alfred Fagon Award for Best New Play of the Year with his play Starstruck.

Speaking at the tenth anniversary of the Awards in 2006 Roy said “It was a great honour to be the first winner of the Award and my play Starstruck which one went on to be performed at the Tricycle Theatre. I remember saying at the time that I hoped this would help to highlight black theatre which would then in turn give birth to a new generation of black playwrights. With the likes of myself, Debbie Tucker Greem, Linda Brogan, Michael Bhim, Trevor Williams and many others being regularly commissioned, all of us having different and unique voices, we have succeeded, but let’s have no complacency please, none of that! I want another ten years of the award and even more black playwrights coming through.”

Roy is featured in the National Theatre Black Plays Archive. His latest play Kingston 8 is playing at Theatre Royal Stratford East.
